It was low teens this a.m. but a warming trend is expected . The weatherpeople have been wrong in the past so lets hope they are wrong again and maybe we can get another weekend of ice in Red Bank .

Red Bank has been sailed the past 3 days , strong winds held sailors off untill about 3:30 p.m. last Friday . Saturday DNs did about 10 races in lively conditions ! Several C,D, and 1 B sternsteerers as well as a dozen arrows sailed too. 2 boats did manage to find weak spots ,1 sailor got quite wet and cold . 2 arrow planks broke and 1 sternsteerer mast broke when a shroud puulled out. No injuries . On Sunday , light winds cancelled morning races but by 2p.m. many boats sailed well with stiffening breezes . The B boat WINNY lost count of how many people got rides -at 1 time 5 kids were on !
The next 2 days are critical - a potential snow event has us on -the -border , so if it stays away we should be good for the coming weekend ! All at once ! - hold your breath ... now BLOW that storm away !!!
stay tuned - check the iceline for conditions -732-747-5665
sail safe , ask locals , ask about local rules , wear a helmet , carry bear claws, wear creepers , then follow the rules

Believe it or not ... despite spring-like weather in the North East, there is good ice out there !! This weekend of March 17-18-19 The International Skeeter Association regatta will take place on Mallets Bay , Vermont . Just morth of Burlington . Race headquaters will be the Hampton Inn ,exit 16 , rt. 89 First race Friday 10 am !
The Yankee association will also hold a Yankee regatta secondary to the ISA.
Mallets Bay is a large area so I assume it would have room for others to sail or race .
Wentworth Lake in N.H. is supposedly sailable too.

So, spring IS here and there is ice , in New England , all I know of is Winnipesaukie in N.H. and Lake Champlain in Vt. If you go check with the locals or check it yourself carfully. remember the ice is never safe .
No April fools joke , the April meeting is thursday the 1st ! The annual awards/end of season party will be saturday the 3rd , beginning 7pm with awards promptly at 8 . Clean up work party in the morning .

Locally , we've been done for several weeks , it appears the north jersey is finished also . The New England lakes may not be completely finished but need to be checked carefully before sailing.
In NSIBYC club news - the yard must be cleared before April 1st , sails and equipment stored in the work shop must be removed ASAP. The April meeting is thursday as usual , the first thursday which happens to be April fools day . The end-of-season/awards party is saturday the 3rd beginning at 7pm , a work party for that saturday morning is the norm .

At this time i have no good reports... Budd and Hopatcong are probably limited sailing . Bantam may come in after the thaw as many northern lakes could also. The Hudson finished a frustrating season this past weekend .
The season is not over but opportunities to sail may be limited, due to travel times north . The northern lakes may melt their snow and have plenty of ice beneeth... so stay tuned .
In club news - the march meting is this thursday eveneing - 8 pm as usual ! and a work party for saturday morning , probably 9am . Please remove boats from the yard and any and all items from the workshop A.S.A.P. !!

Its getting late in the season , so sail safely ... Budd Lake , Round Valley and Lake Hopatcong remain sailable, but check local condituions before venturing out. There are reports of open water or thin areas.
The Hudson River club has invite NSIBYC memebers this coming weekend (Feb 28&29) to a challenge for ANY stern steerers to race the JACK FROST on about a 5 mile piece of ice . Launching is at the Rokeby estate.
the Dn North Americans are being sailed on Sandusky Bay< Ohio, under trying conditions, rain and snow , lite winds , as of yesterday...
There may be other sailable ice after this thaw and re-freeze but at this time i have no confirmed reports. check the iceline for up to the hour(sometimes) information - 732-747-5665

Red Bank is done for now, doubtful to come back ... the South Shrewsbury is still being sailed out of Oceanport with fairly smooth ice . Budd lake and Hopatcong are sailable but rough . The hot spot could be Round Valley resevoir ! It will be considered for the DN easterns and the N.J. Skeeter regattas this coming weekend -stay tuned aaand check the iceline for more recent updates - 732-747-5665

... its been warm the past few days , barely below freezing at night . The open water has been eroding the ice from west to east, making the large saling area risky to get to, also the crack may be larger with the warm weather . High winds tonight and saturday could put us out of business before sundays cold front reaches us . The iceline is, at times updated hourly and is as current as possible -732-747-5665 . Currently, the Sout Shrewsbury is being sailed on from oceanport all the way across to Little Silver, but could be getting thin... also Budd Lake is sailable as is lake Hopatcong although they both caold be bumpy .

... pouring rain friday night , ended in time to smooth the river but remain soft this past saturday . Dropping temps sat. night locked things up hard and fairly smooth for sunday , but howling winds limited some sailers. The yankees screamed around the course with storm sails(if they had one) arrows roared around also ! older DNs sailed with loose sheets and baged sails ! late in the day the high teck DNs ventured out as the winds let up a bit , as did 2 d-class stern steerers which sailed past sunset !!
Curently the ice IS holding in Red Bank , but the warm weather has made the usual spots OFF LIMITS for sure - stay away from the area directly opposite the club (Middletown shore) and cross the crack perpendicular only on the south side of the river . If you are unfamiliar with the area - ASK a local , then ask another !! the iceline is updated daily and sometimes hourly ... check it -732-747-5665
the next few days will be critical for continued sailing in Red Bank ... pray to the ice spirits...

Well, if you did'nt sail this past weekend, its your own fault ! there still is sailable ice in Red Bank and Toms River in N.J. Unfortunatly we recieved about 1 inch light snow last night and its very posible to get more over the next few days. But untill that happens ... sail
The DN Easterns are being considered for Eastern Mass. this coming weekend .

As I said , this past weekend was a road trip ... to miles of ice ... but unfortunately light winds . Southern Lake Champlain was the site of the I S A which was able to get 3 races for the A skeeteres . Dan Clapp in Insanity won all three ! Congratulations to Dan !!
The DN easterns were not able to get any racing in due to light winds.
Ice conditions are currently up in warm air ... there definately could be spring sailing available when this current heat wave passes . Bantam , Wallenpaupak, and other not too distant lakes are possible as well as Champlain and Winnipisaukee . So, stay tuned and do a road trip ! they are a blast ! The I S A has been postponed , apparently due to lack of western boats willing to travel ... At this time , the coming weekend is still a toss up , home ice is gone , the South Shrewsbury is gone , but not too far north , Budd and Hopatcong are GOOD possibilities for the weekend.
There should be several skeeters sailing lake Champlain ( Button Bay) and the DN easterns MAY be held there .
The Yankee regatta could be on Hopatcong ...
Bantam should be good , as well as The Hudson .
Hopefully I will get good information to post thurs eve !!
