Club Awards

The following are some of the more noteworthy trophies which are awarded by our club or for which our fleets race:

Charlie Soden Memorial Trophy (active members)

This trophy, commonly known as the "SLICK CHICK" trophy, is awarded annually by the Board of Governors to the adult member considered to have done an exceptionally fine job in building, rebuilding, or finishing an ice boat. This is in memory of Charlie, whose Slick Chick was an example of perfection in workmanship.

Charlie Soden Memorial Trophy (junior members)
This trophy, commonly known as the "Outstanding Junior Member" trophy, is awarded by the Board of Governors for the most outstanding participation in club activities by a Junior member. The trophy was donated by the Soden family in loving memory of Charlie.

Del Fisher Memorial Trophy
This trophy is awarded annually by the Trophy Committee to a member who has displayed a continuing interest in the club and its activities, and a high degree of general good sportsmanship. It is in memory of Del, a very well-loved old-time member who was active on our river well into his 80's.

Herb Edwards Memorial Trophy
This trophy was donated by honorary member A. J. Lippman in memory of his old friend and honorary member Herb Edwards. It is awarded by the Board of Governors to a member who has performed an outstanding single act on behalf of the club.

John N. Darling Memorial Pennant
This pennant, offered by the Board of Governors, is in memory of John Darling, a faithful member of the club for probably 70 years. John had built literally dozens of small stern steerers, many of which are still sailed. Appropriately, this pennant is restricted to competition by C and D stern steerers sailed by our club members. Race location for this pennant is determined by the Board of Governors, and three races of three laps each on a windward, leeward course with no time allowance constitutes a match.

Commodore Weaver Trophy
This trophy is presented to the winner of the first A Boat race of the season on home ice. The trophy is the gift of William W. Vaughn to perpetuate the memory of James B. Weaver, founder and commodore of the North Shrewsbury Ice Boat & Yacht Club, father of ice yachting on the Navesink.

Third Class Ice Yacht Challenge Pennant of America
This pennant was originally offered in 1902 by our club, and the rules of the challenge and race were revised in 1949. The rules restrict the challenge for this pennant to Class A Stern Steerers and the race is restricted to "not more than two (2) yachts on behalf of the challenging club, and not more than two (2) yachts on behalf of the challenged club". The match consists of not less than 3 races of not less than 20 miles, on the ice of the club holding the pennant.

Third Class Ice Yacht Challenge Pennant of New Jersey
This pennant, offered by our club, has similar requirements to the previously described Third Class Ice Yacht Challenge Pennant of America.

Cal Smith Memorial Trophy
This trophy is awarded annually by the Trophy Committee to the outstanding novice member of the DN fleet and is in memory of Cal, a very active DNer until his death. Cal was also the author of a very well-known book on ice boating, entitled simply "Ice Boating".

Pete Wingerter Memorial Trophy
This trophy is in memory of Pete, the designer and builder of the Vanguard, a magnificent Marconi-rigged A Boat. Pete was a past commodore of our club and an avid A Boater until his death. The trophy, donated by Mrs. Wingerter, is raced for annually. Eligibility to race for the trophy is restricted to club member A Boats, either Gaff or Marconi-rigged, and the race consists of 5 laps on a triangular course.

Challenge Ice Yacht Cup of America
This cup was originated in 1889 by Mr. Gardiner Van Nostrand and the Orange Lake Ice Yacht Club, Newburgh, N.Y. It is known variously as the "Orange Lake Trophy" and the "Van Nostrand Cup". Records show that it was raced for and won by the NSIB&YC in 1898.

RACES/REGATTAS

The following are some of the races and regattas in which our fleets participate. All races are run under the rules and regulations of the National Ice Boat Authority, of which our club is a member.

NSIB&YC Club Races
Club races for each class of boat are held each season and trophies are awarded. Club races  must be held on our home ice unless an individual fleet chooses to race at other sites. The DN fleet, for instance, frequently travels to upstate lakes for club races when there is no ice on our river.

National Sweepstakes Ice Boat Regatta
This regatta, initiated in 1970,  is one of the largest regattas in the country and is open to all classes from all over the world. It is held annually, ice conditions permitting, on a date chosen by our Regatta Committee, and on our Navesink River.

Eastern Ice Yacht Association Regatta
This regatta is held annually, ice conditions permitting, on the 3rd weekend in January at various sites throughout the eastern United States. The EIYA is composed of about 14 ice boating clubs in the eastern region, and our club is a member. Because of the large number of boats in the association, there is a limit on the number of boats a club may enter, usually five per class. As this is a club vs club regatta, generally our top boats and skippers are entered, and in fairness to those skippers whom we send to the regatta, no club races may be held during this weekend (per bylaw change in 1994-1995 season).

 National Yankee Regatta
This regatta is held annually at various sites and is open to all Yankee skippers in the country who are members of the Yankee Association.

Eastern International Skeeter Regatta
This regatta is held annually, ice conditions permitting, on the 1st weekend in January at various sites and is open to all A, B, and C Skeeters in the Eastern Region.

International Skeeter Regatta
This regatta is held annually at various sites and is open to all A, B, and C Skeeters in the world.

New Jersey Skeeter Regatta
This regatta is held annually at various sites and is open to all A, B, and C Skeeters in New Jersey.

I.D.N.I.Y.R.A. Gold Cup World Championships
This regatta is held annually and is open to International DN Association members throughout the world. Site of the regatta is alternated annually between North America and Europe.

North American I.D.N.I.Y.R.A. Championships
The "DN North Americans" are held annually with the site alternated among the four regional areas: east, west, midwest, and Canada.

I.D.N.I.Y.R.A. North American Eastern Regional Championships
The "DN Easterns" are held annually in the Eastern Region at a site determined by the Regatta Committee.

Invitational Regattas
In addition to the regularly scheduled annual regattas, there are many "invitationals" run by the various clubs in North America to which our club is invited. These clubs are scattered over the northern part of our country from New Jersey to as far west as Wisconsin and into Canada. With the large number of regattas and sailing sites available, it is quite obvious that if an ice boater has the time and inclination, he can spend many exciting weekends enjoying the thrill of ice boat racing or simply pleasure sailing.
